Blood Donation Criteria

 

Guidelines and parameters laid down by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India on eligibility criteria:

                    Overall health: The donor must be fit and healthy and should not be suffering from transmittable diseases.

                    Age and weight: The donor must be 18–65 years old and should weigh a minimum of 45 kg.

                    Pulse rate: Pulse of the donor should be normal.

                    Haemoglobin level: A minimum of 12.5 g/dL.

                    Blood pressure: The systolic and diastolic blood pressure are within normal limits

                    Body temperature: Should be normal, with an oral temperature not exceeding 37.5 °C.

·                     Female blood donor: Should have delivered 1 year ago and stopped lactation

                    Time period: The time period between successive blood donations for Men can be once in every three months while Women can be every four months.

Confirmation of your eligibility to donate blood is done by professionals attached with blood banks / hospitals.

Individuals under certain conditions are deemed ineligible to donate blood:

                    A person who has been tested HIV positive.

                    Individuals suffering from ailments like heart diseases, hypertension, cancer, epilepsy, kidney ailments and diabetes, asthma on steroids, bleeding disorders, thalassemia, sickle cell anemia,  polycythemia vera, tuberculosis, allergic disorders, Hepatitis B, C, Leprosy

·                     A person who has been treated for malaria in last three months or 3 years if residing in endemic areas

·                     A person who has undergone ear/body piercing or tattoo in the past 12 months.

                    Individuals who have undergone immunization for Cholera, Typhoid, Diptheria, Tetanus, Plague in last one month, Gammglobulin in last 15 days, rabbies vaccination in last 1 year have been treated for

                    A person who has consumed alcohol in the past 24 hours.

                    Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding.

                    Individuals who have undergone major dental procedures or general surgeries in the past 1 month.

                    Women who have had miscarriage in the past 6 months.
